By attending ProstAware’s ninth annual Blue Ties luncheon, guests become part of a team intent on defeating this disease. Famed pro football coach Dan Reeves, William King of iconic funk/soul band The Commodores, and 11Alive’s Jerry Carnes, the event’s emcee, help lead the charge. ProstAware’s Blue Ties luncheon takes place 11:30 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead.
ProstAware’s mission is to use music, technology, and sports to engage men and their loved ones into meaningful discussions about prostate cancer. In 2016, Blue Ties hosted more than 450 guests and scored a touchdown by raising $125,000, which bolstered ProstAware’s mission of providing education and awareness of prostate cancer to our community.

“Blue Ties serves as ProstAware’s key fundraiser,” said Dr. Scott Miller, the organization’s president and founder, and the director of Robotic Surgery at Northside Hospital and Georgia Urology. “This luncheon event is the perfect example of our unique form of providing prostate cancer awareness.”

Expect Carnes to tell the inspiring story of his own personal bout with prostate cancer. King, also a prostate cancer survivor, will share his own experience of triumph over the disease. In addition to Reeves speaking to the audience, other sports luminaries will appear. This includes former Washington Redskins center and three-time Super Bowl champion, Jeff Bostic, who also is a prostate cancer survivor. With a live music act providing the soundtrack, ProstAware’s game plan comes to life.

As the war rages on, Dr. Scott Miller –he’s been named a Top Doc by Castle Connolly nine years in a row– continues serving as a crusader in prostate cancer treatment and awareness. Dr. Miller recommends once men reach age 40, they should talk to their doctor about their risk of prostate cancer. Statistics reveal that one in six men will be affected by prostate cancer in their lifetime.

“Overcoming prostate cancer is all about awareness, early detection and proper treatment. Persistence and resilience are key attributes in the fight against prostate cancer,” said Dr. Miller. “With 23 years as a successful head coach in the NFL, Dan Reeves certainly applied those aspects to the game.”

Dan Reeves coached the Denver Broncos, New York Giants, and Atlanta Falcons. He played or coached in a record nine Super Bowls – five with the Dallas Cowboys, three with Denver, and one with Atlanta. Before donning his head coach’s headset, Reeves spent 16 years in the Cowboys organization – five as a player, three as a player/coach, and eight as an assistant coach.

William King is a founding member of acclaimed American funk/soul band, The Commodores. In addition to being the group’s choreographer, he plays trumpet, guitar, synthesizer, flute, and congas/percussion. The Commodores’ most successful period was in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Lionel Richie was the co-lead singer. The band’s biggest hit singles are ballads such as “Easy,” “Three Times a Lady” and “Nightshift”; and dance hits including “Brick House,” “Fancy Dancer,” “Lady (You Bring Me Up),” and “Too Hot ta Trot.” In 1986, The Commodores won their first Grammy for the song “Nightshift.”

Jerry Carnes has been a part of the 11Alive broadcast team for more than 25 years. Viewers currently recognize him as Commuter Dude, a traffic reporter who knows metro Atlanta’s highways and byways like no other. Carnes is a husband and a father of three. A prostate cancer survivor, Carnes has been cancer-free since late 2008. According to Carnes, he can’t wait to return to the ProstAware podium as emcee.

This year’s Blue Ties event sponsors include Northside Hospital, Georgia Urology, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Lenz, Toyota, Coca-Cola, UPS, and Da Vinci Surgical System. Media sponsors include 11Alive, Atlanta magazine, News/Talk WSB, 97.1 The River, and “The Weekly Check-Up.” To inquire about sponsorship opportunities call 404-512-0512.
