Vince and Barbara Dooley help ProstAware raise $125,000 at Blue Ties Luncheon to create awareness for prostate cancer

September 26, 2016 (Atlanta) — Legendary University of Georgia football coach Vince Dooley and his wife, Barbara Dooley, the former radio personality and political activist, Heisman Trophy-winning special guest George Rogers and emcee Jeff Hullinger of 11 Alive helped to raise $125,000 at ProstAware’s eighth annual Blue Ties Luncheon on Sept. 9 at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead.

ProstAware is a nonprofit devoted to raising awareness about prostate cancer through the use of music, technology and sports. The total amount raised exceeded Blue Ties’ total in 2015 of $75,000. In a discussion with Hullinger, Barbara Dooley spoke earnestly and comically about her experience as a breast cancer survivor and Vince Dooley discussed the importance of prostate cancer awareness, among various other topics.

More than 450 people attended this year’s event, with special guests including former Atlanta Falcons and Braves player Brian Jordan, former Washington Redskins player Jeff Bostic and his wife Lynn. The band Lilac Wine played during the event, performing the song “Tell It Like It Is,” written by Dr. Scott Miller, the founder of ProstAware, about what a patient might experience upon receiving a prostate cancer diagnosis.

Dr. Miller, a urologic robotic surgeon with Georgia Urology, and Tim Smith, the executive director of ProstAware who is a prostate cancer survivor himself, have been crusaders against prostate cancer, the second-leading cause of cancer death in American men, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). In 2016, more than 180,000 new cases will be diagnosed in the United States, ACS estimates.

“I am thrilled that we were able to have such a successful event and that we were able to raise a record amount of money for ProstAware,” Dr. Miller said. “I would like to publicly thank Vince and Barbara Dooley for taking time to help make such an important contribution to our cause this year. With these funds and with the attention that they brought to our mission, hopefully, we can help to save more men’s lives and extend the geographic footprint of ProstAware beyond metro Atlanta.”

Dooley won 201 games between 1964 and 1988 at Georgia and is best known for guiding the Bulldogs to the 1980 national title. He was twice named national coach of the year and seven times earned Southeastern Conference coach of the year honors. He served as Georgia’s athletic director for 15 years after retiring as football coach. Barbara Dooley is an avid supporter of cancer prevention and awareness.
